About the event
Holi is a festival celebrated primarily in India and Nepal, but also in other parts of world as well and among the Indian diaspora around the world. It usually falls in March, marking the arrival of spring. Holi is also known as the "Festival of Colors" or the "Festival of Love."
The main day of Holi, called "Rangwali Holi," is celebrated by people throwing colored powder and water at each other, having water balloon fights, and using water guns to drench one another. The colors used during Holi are traditionally made from natural substances like turmeric, neem, and other herbal sources, but synthetic colors are also common nowadays.
Holi has religious significance as well. It commemorates various events in Hindu mythology, including the burning of the demoness Holika, the sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu, and the playful antics of Lord Krishna, a major deity in Hinduism, who is said to have played Holi with his consort Radha and other gopis (cowherd girls).
In addition to the colorful celebrations, Holi is also a time for family gatherings, feasting on traditional foods and sweets, and spreading joy and goodwill among friends and communities. It's a vibrant and lively festival that brings people together to celebrate the arrival of spring and the triumph of good over evil.
